Italian Food in Costa Mesa

Posted on June 17, 2009. Filed under: Restaurant Recommendations |

I could live on Pasta. Just plain with some butter, garlic and Parmesan. Simple and so satisfying. A good Italian place needs to bring out fresh bread and have a variety of salads to choose from as well. Because as much as I love pasta, sometimes I just want a refreshing salad.

Sweet Basil
I love their salmon salad. It has plenty of salmon and capers. Salty and refreshing. Jon really likes their chicken calzone. They bring garlic bread with warm marinara to your table. There isn’t a ton special about this place, but it is small, quiet, and good. $10-$15 per person

Mama D’s
Their bread is incredible. And, they have the best ice. Weird that I love their ice, but it is the little balls of ice that are so fun to crunch. Their ravioli’s and pink sauce are fabulous. Pesto needs some fine tuning. Everything else is just like a standard Italian place. What sets them apart is their service. The friendliest waiting staff ever! So nice and sincere. I love it! Great for a date night or family dinner. $10-$20 per person

Soprano’s
It is just 1 block from our house, so we love to walk there and enjoy a casual meal.
About $15 per person. I enjoyed their salmon and chicken parmigiana. And they bring out bread.

Il Fornio (Irvine, Not Costa Mesa, but it is our FAVORITE Italian place)
We went here last night for dinner. We had a gift card so we went all out: 1 glass of wine, 1 appetizer, 1 entree (we shared the porterhouse) and the dessert trio. For $67. Usually when we go and each order 1 entree it is about $30, give or take a couple bucks.
Here are the items we have tried, and lOVED:
Proscuitto e Melone (Only ok, the melon wasn’t very ripe)
Butternut Squash soup (Seasonal, and delicious)
Pennoni alla Vodka (freaking awesome! Pasta, bacon and a pink sauce)
Conchiglie al Pollo (Jon’s favorite)
Bistecca alla Fiorentina (Porterhouse steak seasoned so simply. Delish!)
Crespelle di Mele (Apple pie crepes, good!)
Tiramisù (the best I have ever had)
Rosina al Cioccolato (Light chocolate mouse, Jon loved it)
